Why a website?

I've long been tired of social media. I gave up on Facebook for many years, and only came back when my wife passed away and I felt obligated to keep up with family via social media (my wife was doing this for us prior to her death).

A year later and I can't stand social media any more than I could before, for all the reasons I hated it years ago. The posts don't keep me in touch with family as much as they provide grandstanding platforms for my "friends" to loudly declare how clearly they are not of "that other political persuasion," or how this current president is ruining everything (as we sit in comfort and wealth unlike anything the world has ever seen). It's just gotten so old, and soul-destroying; it clearly helped push us to a grueling election season, culminating in an assault on the US Capital on January 6 (one of a handful of dates that I will never forget).

Well, anyway, on more than one occassion here lately, I've run into "come back to the simpler life" blog posts, beconing me back to old-fashioned blogs and websites. There are many platforms to choose from, and this one (Neocities) seemed a great choice.

So I made one, and here it is!

Enjoy my new website, free of ads, spinny thingies, and generally anything that would distract you from reading (which is why i chose this DOS look, it's easy to read and clearly goes with the back-to-basics goal of my site).

About the "DOS Look" of the website

This is called Bootstrap.386, and with it you can build a website that looks just like the good(?) old DOS days. It's built on a foundation called Bootstrap, which honestly I can't live without anymore. But there's an irony here, too: the Bootstrap package was built by Twitter. So, I'm using a Twitter open-source package to build a website to avoid social media, like...Twitter!

In fairness, so many sites are built on Bootstrap now that it's just "built in" to a lot of our development toolsets these days, and you can thank this package for a great many of the very well-designed websites you're accustomed to.
